ES MI REVOLUCIÓN
In Mexico, there is a deep-rooted culture of machismo and gender violence — ten women die on average each day as a result of violence and studies show 99% of feminicides go unpunished. Mexico is one of the most violent countries in Latin America, and the brutality with which women and girls are killed is unacceptable. It has become a real danger to be a woman in this country, neither the government nor any institution is willing to create public policies to prevent the cruelty of femicides. Many states in Mexico have issued a declaration of gender violence against women for years, however, murders have increased and impunity persists. In recent years, the feminist movement has gained a lot of strength, as activists across the country have mobilized to denounce feminicides and impunity. These groups are fighting for their lives, protesting against the government for ignoring gender violence. As such, feminists have protested by occupying the National Human Rights Commission to demand justice. The feature ‘Es mi revolución’ includes photos taken in Mexico City and Sinaloa during the feminist marches on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and International Women’s Day. These are the women at the forefront of the movement against the patriarchal system.
